Is a Thousand Trails Membership Worth It?

Our Honest Review: Four Months into Our Membership

We are a family of six and have been traveling full-time in our RV since October 2024, but our experience with Thousand Trails didn’t start there.

Back in 2022, we spoke with a Thousand Trails representative about their then-available lifetime memberships. At the time, the $17,000 upfront price tag (plus annual dues) felt like too big a commitment for our family - we still were researching how we wanted to travel. We decided to choose flexibility over contracts and explore freely instead.

Fast forward to the fall of 2024, and we made a different decision.

We bought into a two-year “Adventure” level membership, and after four months of real-world use, here’s our honest Thousand Trails review, who we think it’s best for, and whether it’s actually worth it for full-time RV families.

What Is Thousand Trails?

Thousand Trails is one of the most popular RV campground membership programs in the United States, especially among full-time RVers and traveling families.

Instead of paying nightly campground fees, members pay:

  • A down payment

  • A monthly fee for the contract period (two or four years)

  • Then stay at Thousand Trails campgrounds with no nightly fee (within stay limits

While Thousand Trails used to offer lifetime memberships, they now operate on 2-year and 4-year contracts, with several membership levels that determine access and flexibility. If you are set on a lifetime membership, there are used memberships available for sale through marketplace platforms that might fit your needs. It’s a complicated system, and after years of modifications to their programs, there are some unique pre-owned options available.

Thousand Trails Membership Levels (Simple Breakdown)

Thousand Trails offers several membership levels -Journey, Explore, and Adventure Memberships, all offering different levels of access to their parks. Zone Passes are also available and are great for part-time or seasonal RVers, and grant access to specific geographic regions with shorter booking windows.

We decided to purchase the Adventure membership, which offers broader nationwide access, longer stays at parks, and better booking windows. It’s a good balance between cost and flexibility.

Each level will indicate how far in advance you can book your reservation. With longer booking windows, you are able to have more options for reservations before others.

Why We Didn’t Buy Thousand Trails at First

When we first considered Thousand Trails, it didn’t feel like a natural fit.

We’re originally from Wisconsin, with family in Kentucky, and we travel that route often. At the time, it felt like most Thousand Trails campgrounds were concentrated in coastal states, so we were concerned we wouldn’t use the membership year-round, or enough to make it financially worth it. Other worries are where we’d feel forced to plan our route to match campground locations, so the cost wouldn’t justify our travel style.

For us, freedom mattered more than predictability in that season.

Why We Finally Bought a Thousand Trails Membership

In fall 2024, we decided to winter in Florida — one of the most Thousand Trails–dense states in the country.

At that point, the math started to make sense. We had committed to finding more families and building community while on the road. All signs were pointing to Thousand Trails, and we had to find out for ourselves.

We purchased the Adventure Membership and planned to spend several months rotating between Florida parks.

If you are just starting to research TT, our biggest recommendation is to speak with a Thousand Trails Representative. Yes, I know - A salesperson. Ugh. Trust us! We had an exceptional experience with our knowledgeable rep and recommend the same one to everyone. If you need someone to walk you through the options, tiers, and benefits, we have a great contact to recommend - just ask!

What We Love About Thousand Trails (After 4 Months)

1. Thousand Trails Is Affordable for Full-Time RV Living

When we break down the numbers, we’re spending around $300 per month on campgrounds (while we are in the TT system). That’s significantly less than what we paid the year before, even while still mixing in non-Thousand Trails campgrounds. For full-time RV families, this can mean thousands of dollars in annual savings. Since we travel through the Mid-West each summer, we are unable to use Thousand Trails year-round. We are loving the cost savings right now, but we won’t be in Florida forever!

2. The Community Aspect Is Real

This is what we were looking for.

Many Thousand Trails members are: full-time RV families or long-term travelers.

Kids recognize each other. Parents connect. It feels less transient than many traditional RV parks — and that community aspect has been invaluable for our family. All Thousand Trails members are moving between parks and making plans with each other when they can connect at the playground again!

3. We Still Have Flexibility

Having a Thousand Trails membership doesn’t mean you’re locked in.

We are still planning to stay at private campgrounds and visit state parks! We are also excited to add more boondocking stays in 2026!

Thousand Trails simply gives us a reliable, budget-friendly option, especially during peak seasons when nightly rates skyrocket.

Who Is Thousand Trails Best For?

Based on our experience, Thousand Trails is a great fit for:

  • Full-time RV families

  • Long-term RV travelers

  • Families who like staying 1–3 weeks in one place

  • RVers who value community and familiarity

  • Travelers who winter in Florida, Texas, or the Southeast

Is Thousand Trails Worth It? Our Honest Opinion

After four months of use, we don’t regret buying a Thousand Trails membership — but we’re also glad we waited until it aligned with our lifestyle. I don’t think it’s something that can be a great fit for everyone, but since we were looking for more families to connect with, it was a step we felt was next in our full-time journey.

Thousand Trails works best when you treat it as one tool in your RV travel toolbox, not the entire plan.

For us, it has lowered our monthly campground costs and is helping us to create community with families.

As with most things in full-time RV life, the real question isn’t “Is Thousand Trails worth it?” — it’s “Is it worth it for your season of life?”

Right now, it’s worth it for ours.
