How to Sell It All and Travel Full-Time in an RV
(Without Losing Your Mind)
Let me be honest right out of the gate: we didn’t really sell it all.
I mean—we sold a lot…like 90% of everything we owned. But we also left behind what feels like an attic full of stuff at my parents’ house. (Thanks, Mom and Dad!)
So if you’re picturing some perfectly minimalist, no-attachments leap into RV life… yeah, that wasn’t us.
And that’s okay.
Because selling it all isn’t really about the stuff anyway, it’s about deciding what kind of life you’re willing to fight for.
The Dream of Full-Time RV Life Didn’t Happen Overnight
We didn’t wake up one morning and decide to travel full-time in an RV.
We dreamed about it for years.
We upgraded our Jeep Gladiator to a Ford F350 in 2021 as we searched endlessly for a fifth wheel that could actually work for long-term family living. And after nearly two years of planning, that RV finally sat in our driveway—ready for its first “camping” trip.
That trip in early 2022?
800 miles from Wisconsin to Kentucky.
With:
a newborn
a one-year-old
a two-year-old
Wild? Absolutely.
Worth it? Completely.
Those two weeks were the best vacation of my life. Not because it was easy—but because it was freeing. Everything we needed was right there. No unpacking. No schedules. Just our family and the road.
That trip changed everything.
Planning, Pausing, and Planning Some More
After that first taste, we kept camping. And we kept planning.
The reality was this:
I was still working full-time.
My husband needed a fully remote job.
We weren’t ready—yet.
Slowly, but surely, the pieces started falling into place.
In 2022, I left my job to stay home with our kids.
In July 2024, our last baby was born.
And 27 days later, we put our house on the market.
The Truck, the Timing, and the Leap
We also knew we needed a new truck—one built for the life we were choosing. That’s a whole post on its own, but long story short: we found the one in 2024, and it was delivered in September.
By then, the logistics were handled.
The real challenge?
The mental shift.
The Hardest Part Was Letting Go
Selling our home wasn’t just a financial decision—it was emotional.
That house carried weight. We moved into it during a traumatic season of our lives. At one point, we truly believed we’d live there forever.
But life changes you.
And eventually, we had to admit the truth:
We were pouring our time, energy, and money into a house that wasn’t giving us the life—or happiness—we wanted.
So we chose differently.
How to Get on the Road Faster (What Actually Matters)
Let’s be clear: it took us four years to hit the road.
But if you’re serious about full-time RV living, here’s what actually helps move things along:
Stop Buying Stuff
Seriously. You have too much.
And almost none of it will matter once you’re living on the road.Build an Emergency Fund
This isn’t optional—it’s smart.RV life is freedom with responsibility.

Facebook Marketplace. Thrift sales. Friends and family.
Don’t wait until the last minute—it’s overwhelming.
Research Your RV (and Inspect It)
Choose a rig that fits your family, not what fits someone else's family.
And always, always get an RV inspection before you buy. More on that in another post.
You Don’t Have to Sell It All—You Just Have to Start
If you’re waiting for the perfect moment, the perfect setup, or the perfect level of bravery… it won’t come.
What does come is clarity—once you decide the life you want is worth the discomfort of change.
We didn’t sell it all.
But we sold enough to finally live.
And that made all the difference
